About Turkey Creek Cove

Jerry and Linda Schmersahl, how it all got started...

In 1979, we sold our house in Texas to start a new job and new adventure in Saudi Arabia. While living overseas we wanted to invest in property in Western North Carolina where Jerry has roots on his mother's side (Scot-Irish Moody clan). We were looking in the local paper and found an ad for 60 acres. It was at the end of Turkey Creek Road and so beautiful we made the deal that day. We later bought another 80 acres behind us and finally another 14 acres in front giving us the entire cove.

In 1998, we decided to build five cabins and a barn to use for rental in our retirement. We later added a covered picnic area, a children's playground, a firepit, and a garage to store equipment needed to maintain the property. The rock walls you find on this property were built some time ago (prior to the previous owner and the property had been in his family for a long time). He didn't know the origin of the walls but everybody guesses they came from old timers clearing what would become fields for livestock to graze and crops to grow.

Finally, in 2020, we built a small retirement home toward the front of the property. Our children and grandchildren love to come and visit us and we love having them here. Our guests love it here too. There are hiking trails, lightning bugs in the summer, deer and birds year round, frogs to catch in the creek, and plenty of room to run and play for children, pets, and adults still young at heart.

Everyone is welcome at Turkey Creek! Join us...

Winter sports

We have Cataloochee ski resort near by if you want to ski or snow board but you can also sled down our hills right below the cabins.

Other activities in the area

There are many activities in the area. The Great Smoky Mountain National Park is 25 minutes away with hiking and its elk, many streams and waterfalls. Asheville and Waynesville have great restaurants, breweries, and distilleries. You can go white water rafting, kayaking and boating in in the summer and skiing, snow tubing, and sledding in the winter.
